About Gulf Coast Tides
The Gulf of Mexico behaves unlike any other US coast. Most of the Gulf experiences diurnal tides — just one high tide and one low tide per day, rather than the two you'd see on the Atlantic or Pacific. This happens because the Gulf's shape and depth create a natural resonance that amplifies the once-daily tidal signal.
Tidal ranges are generally small, averaging 1–2 feet, but wind-driven water level changes can be dramatic in shallow bays and estuaries. Tampa Bay, Galveston Bay, and the shallow Louisiana marshes all respond significantly to wind and pressure as well as tidal forces — making real-time data especially useful.
